A water crisis has struck Benton Charter Township, Michigan, prompting a critical 'boil water' advisory. This means residents must take extra precautions to ensure their water is safe. But what exactly happened, and what does it mean for you? Let's dive in.
Benton Charter Township officials have issued a water boil notice. This is a serious matter, advising residents not to drink tap water without boiling it first.
So, what's the deal? The water advisory is due to a distribution pump failure that occurred just before 1:00 AM on January 17th. This caused a loss of water pressure, potentially allowing bacteria to contaminate the water supply, specifically in the area west and north of the Southwest Michigan Regional Airport.
What should you do? Any water used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food must be boiled first. This simple step kills any harmful bacteria that may be present.
Pressure was thankfully restored shortly before 7:00 AM. Now, water samples are being collected to determine if the water quality meets state drinking water standards.
Township Supervisor Cathy Yates explained the situation: "There is a veil that is frozen, and we tried many ways of getting it thawed, but the river is not working with us right now, we do have a company out there today that is helping us, and we are making water currently, but we have to go through some steps before we can remove the boil order." She further stated, "Things have to be tested for safety. We have to work with the city and also with our residents, and that's why we're asking them, for the time being to boil, and we will be doing some testing from various homes to make sure that everything is safe."
And this is the part most people miss... The township is working diligently to resolve the problem, and anticipates the boil order will be lifted within 48 hours. They are working closely with the EGLE (presumably the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy), following strict protocols to ensure the safety of the water supply. Supervisor Yates added, "I've met with EGLE twice today, and I'll be meeting with them tomorrow. We'll watch. They're watching every step we do, and we're following protocol to make sure that we keep all water safe for all users."
The township will notify residents when the water is safe, and the boil order is no longer in effect.
