A collection of mysteriously oversized Roman shoes, unearthed at a Northumberland fort, is set to go on public display, leaving historians and enthusiasts alike scratching their heads.
Discovered at the Magna Roman Fort in Northumberland, these 34 leather shoes, excavated in 2025, include eight pairs measuring at least 30cm (11.8in) in length—equivalent to a UK size 13 to 14. To put this in perspective, out of the 5,000 shoes found over 55 years at the nearby Vindolanda settlement in Hexham, only four or five were this large, according to Roman archaeology expert Dr. Elizabeth Greene. And this is the part most people miss: Tombstones and cultural objects could hold the key to unraveling this historical riddle.
The preservation of these shoes is itself a marvel, thanks to the low-oxygen soil conditions at both Magna and Vindolanda, which have kept the leather intact for centuries. But as Frame notes, the most revealing discoveries are likely still buried, waiting to be uncovered in the final two years of the dig, beginning in April.
