Indian Ambassador to the U.S., Vinay Mohan Kwatra, couldn't be prouder. He emphasizes that this launch, facilitated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is a testament to the growing strength of the India-U.S. alliance in space.
"Today is a momentous day for our countries' space collaboration," Kwatra stated. "It's a testament to the hard work and vision of our space engineers and scientists, and a huge step towards achieving Prime Minister Modi's Atmanirbharta objectives."
But here's where it gets controversial: Atmanirbharta, a term that translates to "self-reliance," is not just about commercial transactions. It's about building India's capabilities to innovate, adopt, and diffuse these innovations across sectors, and then collaborate with foreign partners to enhance cooperation.
The launch of BlueBird-6, part of AST SpaceMobile's next-generation satellite constellation, is a perfect example. It showcases India's ability to provide reliable launch services, having successfully launched 434 satellites for 34 countries.
And this is the part most people miss: India's space achievements are not just about the technology. They're about building an entire ecosystem, from research and development to supply chain integration.
"India has always been an important technology generator in space, but it's the supply chain integration that sets us apart," Kwatra explained. "We have our own research labs, launch capabilities, and the ability to adopt and diffuse technology across sectors. It's a strategic achievement."
Among India's recent notable achievements are Chandrayaan-3's historic soft landing near the Moon's south pole and the successful SPADEX mission, critical for future lunar missions.
"As we reflect on these achievements, we must use them as a foundation to build upon. It's not just about our capabilities, but also about the partnerships we forge based on those capabilities," Kwatra concluded.
