Prepare to dive into a captivating world with Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse! This sequel to the beloved visual novel adventure has me kicking myself for not playing the first game sooner. But here's where it gets controversial... should you really play the sequel first? Let's explore!
You step into the shoes of Yuza Minakuchi, an 18-year-old with a tragic past. Five years ago, he survived a devastating sea tragedy that claimed the lives of his parents and many villagers. With hazy memories, Yuza returns to his island home, Kameshima, a place steeped in real-world Japanese mythology and culture. It's a small, tight-knit community with a dwindling ama diver population, where secrets are hard to keep.
Yuza's mother and grandmother were ama divers, and he decides to follow in their footsteps, driven by a desire to keep his mother's spirit alive and a belief that mermaids may be connected to his survival. But instead of mermaids, he encounters a Tomokazuki, a cursed creature that usually leads divers to their doom. This encounter sets off a chain of events as Yuza teams up with childhood friends Azami and Tsukasa, and the latter's enigmatic friend, Sato, to unravel the mysteries of Kameshima.
But Yuza isn't alone in his quest. The island attracts a fantasy writer, Avi Barnum, and a paranormal exorcist, Circe Lunarlight. Also present are investigator Yumeko Shiki and her psychic assistant Sodo Kiryu, investigating a curse and two murder cases. It's a complex web of characters and storylines, yet the game manages to keep everything organized and engaging.
The real magic of Paranormasight lies in its non-linear storytelling. It's a bold and intricate narrative, with intertwined perspectives and story threads that overlap and rejoin at crucial moments. The game cleverly gates your knowledge, ensuring you have enough information to progress, but completing other chapters adds crucial context and triggers alternate outcomes. It's a brilliant way to keep players engaged and invested.
I was absolutely hooked by this style of storytelling. It left me with multiple options to explore, and I found myself deeply invested in Avi's storyline, which provided additional context for Yumeko's. The choices you make impact your experience, making each playthrough unique yet equally challenging.
The story itself is a masterpiece, filled with Japanese mythology, twists, and well-written characters. It's so captivating that I accidentally played until 4 am on my first night! The gameplay is a blend of visual novel and point-and-click adventure, with simple mechanics that are seamlessly woven into the narrative. Every element, from UI to minigames, is utilized to create phenomenal moments.
But here's the catch: to fully appreciate Paranormasight, you must go in blind. It's a game about discovery and self-exploration, and strategy guides could spoil the experience. While there are a few minor issues, like overly fiddly mechanics and the absence of voice acting in key moments, the game is an absolute delight.
Visually, it's stunning on Switch 2 with its hand-drawn art style and moody soundtrack. While mouse controls would have been a nice addition, the game runs smoothly. Overall, Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse is a masterpiece of storytelling, a must-play for fans of visual novels and a unique gaming experience. It gets a well-deserved 4.5/5 rating from me. Now, I'm off to play the first game! What do you think? Should you play the sequel first, or is it a must to start from the beginning? Let's discuss in the comments!
